Comprehensive Guide to Home Battery Backup Systems

The importance of going green is heavily talked about these days, and if you haven’t heard, clean energy is a great way to contribute to an eco-friendly lifestyle. Additionally, having independent energy sources can provide power during electrical outages. The batteries for these energy backup systems can be either dry or wet. Dry lithium-ion batteries do not work well in high temperatures, while wet batteries utilize liquid electrolytes (lead acid) to form electricity.

For an easy and renewable form of power, these whole-home battery systems can connect to solar panels to recharge when needed. If a full set of solar panels is not possible due to a lack of sunlight or budgetary reasons, a portable battery with a solar power charger is another option.

Home batteries store energy generated by solar panels or the power grid during off-peak hours, allowing occupants to use the stored electricity during power outages or whenever they choose.

When selecting the battery backup system for your home, keep various factors in mind, such as peak, start, running voltage, and amperage. All electrical appliances should have the capability to run simultaneously, so it is imperative to ensure the battery backup system can handle it. If the battery system is incapable of powering everything concurrently, electrical wiring issues might arise. Price and installation costs are also important aspects to keep in mind when choosing a home battery backup system.

While solar panels produce electricity during the day, they do not generate power at night or during cloudy weather, which can obstruct sunlight. This is where battery backup systems come into play: they can be used anytime, allowing the homeowner to be more electrically independent. The utility grid can also charge battery backup systems if solar panels are unavailable or not installed with the home.

Surge requirements of specific devices are important to keep in mind, especially when starting strong motors like sump pumps. Pool filters, air conditioning units, and other appliances with heavy electrical loads might not be feasible with a battery backup system.

If a continuous stream of backup battery power is not necessary for your home, consider smaller units that are generally used in emergencies.

There are many brands and types of battery backup systems. Ensure the one you choose meets all your needs, including budget, power capacity, and more.

Need help deciding which home battery backup system is best for you? Or do you need to schedule an installation? Call the pros at State Electric Company today!

Green Building Trends to Watch

The Center on Global Energy Policy reported that the worldwide buildings sector uses roughly 30 percent of energy for natural gas, electricity, heating, cooling, lighting, equipment, cooking, and more. Decarbonization is an important factor when it comes to the construction sector. With global warming on the rise, eco-friendly commercial buildings are in high demand, especially considering the large amount of non-renewable resources used for energy. Several environmental trends are on the rise; keep reading to learn more about them.

Water Conservation
Rainwater capture and other water-conservation methods are being tapped into by cities, hoping to lower their burden on supplies. Decades of drought have forced reclamation facilities to examine below-normal water storage, so onsite water reuse systems have been gaining popularity worldwide. These treatment techniques collect water from stormwater, wastewater, and rainwater. Moreover, the non-potable water is reused for outdoor irrigation and flushing toilets. Smart water systems also inform property managers about water consumption, leaks, malfunctions, or other issues. Electric water heaters are also on the rise, as these help decrease fossil fuel dependence.

Renewable Energy Generation
Photovoltaic systems and solar panels are used for renewable energy generation and energy storage, lowering s a building’s carbon footprint and utility bills. Between January 2022 and January 2023, the price of energy rose almost 13 percent. Ultra-large batteries store electricity so buildings can use it as a reserve when necessary. Energy-efficient heat pumps and solar panels benefit builders, as they can provide sizable savings for electricity usage.

Inflation Reduction Act
The United States’ largest climate investment initiative of all time, dubbed The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), was signed into law in August 2022. Millions of dollars of rebates and tax credits for greener and more energy-efficient building upgrades are being set by the IRA. With more energy-efficient HVAC systems, electric ovens, water heaters, etc., IRA incentives will be more attainable.

Energy-Efficient Equipment
Environmentally friendly equipment is on the rise as many buildings switch to all-electric Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) technology, zoning, and smarter system controls. VRF technology allows a building to be split into several zones for heating and air conditioning, depending on what is needed. Zoning is based on smart controls that improve energy usage for architects, builders, engineers, and building owners.

Building Materials
The IRA denotes funding to the General Services Administrator (GSA), as listed in Section 60503, for construction materials and low-embodied carbon rates for governmental construction projects. As these energy tactics expand, the market is expected to grow. Window glazing can reduce a building’s energy usage, as can photovoltaic windows, which can lend solar power to the building and reduce carbon emissions by up to 40 percent.

Five Reasons to Hire an Electrician for Solar Panel Maintenance

To lower our carbon footprint, thereby reducing global warming, we need to use less fossil fuels. Thankfully, the sun provides powerful energy that can be harnessed through solar panels. Solar power provides electricity for both businesses- and homeowners alike. Typically, solar panels are installed by experienced electricians and are low maintenance. However, an electrician should perform routine maintenance to ensure the solar panels receive the proper diagnostic tests and are at peak performance. Read on for five reasons electricians are the best bet for solar panel maintenance.

Complete Diagnostics
Solar panels are composed of a plethora of complex parts, many of which are only recognized by a qualified electrician. By determining the source of any issues and suggesting appropriate solutions for those problems, electricians know the right questions to ask. Electricians should be made aware if the system has ever been serviced before. They can also determine which panels failed or need to be replaced.

Safety
Generally, solar panels cannot electrocute someone simply by touching them, but they can give someone a low-grade burn due to the hot cells. However, malfunctions can cause solar panels to become dangerously electrified. Faulty solar panels can also cause fires. To avoid disastrous situations, it is imperative to have an electrician oversee the solar panel system.

Optimize Power
Electricians can guide solar panel owners to achieve their financial and environmental goals by providing an estimate of savings. They can also measure the system output, determining daily electronic use. Generally, the evening rate for electricity is lower than the daytime, so an electrician can suggest when the solar panels are at their peak production. If more solar panels are needed, they can install them accordingly.

Early Identification
Proper maintenance can help avoid future issues, but electrical problems can happen anytime. Experienced electricians can inspect cables, isolators (polarity, tightening, wiring termination, etc.), panels, and inverters. They can also perform a number of system tests to ensure it is functioning properly. Detecting issues early can help save funds and ensure the system works correctly.

Post-Warranty Repairs
While most solar panels come with a manufacturer warranty, they generally expire at some point. Once the warranty has lapsed, experienced electricians can ensure the system still functions properly by repairing or replacing crucial components such as inverters.

Solar panels come with many benefits, most notably lowering utility bills. Also, solar panels lend to utilizing clean energy and reducing fossil fuel dependability. To ensure the system is functioning correctly, experienced electricians are the best bet.

2023 Power Sector Trends

The energy transition into clean energy has ramped up throughout the United States, bringing the Inflation Reduction Act – a variety of tax credits and other incentives – with it. Governments and corporations are motivated to implement decarbonization goals while driving renewable and energy storage options.

However, some hiccups in the road, including supply chain complications, inflation, soaring interest rates, and an anti-dumping solar trade have stalled the transition a bit. Despite the setbacks, electric vehicles (EVs) are experiencing immense growth in sales, though some questions linger regarding how tax credits in the Inflation Reduction Act will be fulfilled.

Power systems in 2023 are anticipating three main challenges, according to Arne Olson, senior partner at Energy and Environmental Economics:

  1. Extreme weather conditions – heat waves, wildfires, and storms can cause severe damage
  2. Phasing out fossil fuels – coal, natural gas, petroleum, etc.
  3. Supply chain – delays the development of new resources

Utilities and lawmakers are tediously trying to battle these challenges by updating load forecasts based on weather patterns and more.

EV sales almost doubled in 2022 and could double again in 2023 as billions in federal incentives hit the market. Thanks to the Biden-Harris Electric Vehicle Charging Action Plan, EV infrastructure was boosted by $7.5 billion to implement a national network of 500,000 vehicle chargers.

Throughout 2022, the solar industry saw reduced growth because of ongoing global supply chain disruptions and the enactment of the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act. Solar Company Hanwha Q Cells announced in early 2023 it will commit $2.5 billion to develop its solar production in Georgia.

The hydrogen industry saw immense growth in 2022, much due to the 2021 Department of Energy’s bipartisan infrastructure law, which injected $8 billion into the hydrogen clean energy program. This was closely followed by the Inflation Reduction Act, which offered novel tax credits for low-carbon hydrogen production.

Energy storage is slated to produce massive growth in 2023 as governments expand their carbon reduction goals. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, wind and solar are in high demand as developers and power plant owners look to increase utility-scale battery storage capacity by four times in the next three years.

Generator Operation Safety

Do you have a backup power plan when the electrical grid goes down? Generators are an excellent option for supplying you and your loved ones with power; however, these powerful machines can be deadly. Whether you’re new to using a generator or well-versed, keeping a few things in mind to operate them safely is vital.

Kevin Cole, the senior associate engineer for Generac, said, “The single biggest thing you can do to run a generator safely is plan how to use your generator before you need it.”

Generators can be portable or standby, the latter meaning that they are permanently hooked up to your property. Home standby generators immediately turn on once power is lost. Both generators have five parts: an internal combustion engine, alternator, starter, fuel tank, and outlets.

Before you decide on a generator, consider the following:

Electrical Load: Ensure the generator you choose can safely handle the power capacity you need and then some. If you lowball the power capacity, it will only power some electronics with insufficient voltage. Think of a utility “brown out,” which can damage many electronic devices.

Transfer Switch: With portable generators comes a manual transfer switch, which connects by a thick, heavy-duty cable, or “genset cord,” plugged into an outdoor outlet. Transfer switches help to isolate circuits needing power, separates the house from the grid, prevent back-feeding electricity, and helps to avoid electrical fires.

GFCI Safety: The National Electrical Code (NEC) demands that dual-voltage (120V and 240V) generators have Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) outlets. GFCI generators need a transfer switch, also required by the NEC.

Correct Cord: If you don’t have a transfer switch installed, you can safely operate appliances while directly plugged into the generator. Refrigerators, power tools, televisions, etc., can run through long-distance extension cords. Make sure the line is thick and rated for exterior use.

Ground Rod: If you plug a heavy-duty extension cord into the generator, do not connect the generator to a ground rod. However, ground rods should be used when powering circuits through a transfer switch.

Location: Never, under any circumstances, operate a generator in a garage, utility building, basement, or shed. Even with open doors or windows, carbon monoxide can collect and become deadly. It has no scent and is virtually invisible to human detection. Always point a generator’s exhaust away from the house.

Using Carbon Capture & Storage in Residential Settings

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is a method to reduce carbon emissions to treat global warming. It’s a three-step process in which we attempt to separate and capture carbon dioxide (CO2) from industrial processes, (like steel and cement production or from burning fossil fuels to generate power,) before it enters the atmosphere.

Once captured, the carbon is compressed and transported via pipeline, trucking, etc., where it’s later stored. Storage locations include holding tanks, underground saline aquifers, or depleted oil and gas reservoirs.

According to the Global CDC Institute, CSS is “a proven technology that has been in safe operation for over 45 years.” While we aspire to capture 90-100%, our current technology has a success rate of 50-68% of captured carbon.

Carbon capture technology is not new; however, decarbonization efforts on residential buildings are, along with discovered methods to reprocess stored CO2.

In Manhattan, five multi-family properties owned by Glenwood Management plan to install CSS systems by March 2023. CO2 will be captured through the buildings’ flue exhaust before escaping into the environment.

The gas will undergo a multi-stage process where it will produce CO2 in a liquid form, then be stored securely in a bulk tank. From there, the liquid CO2 will be sold to an NYC-based masonry firm, where the CO2 will be made into concrete blocks.

In 2024, New York City’s Local Law 97 will begin to penalize buildings based on their CO2 emissions, so we’ll likely see this technology expand throughout.

Electric Vehicle Tax Credits

Sales of electric (and hybrid) vehicles are skyrocketing, leaving many new and prospective customers questioning which EVs qualify for the federal tax credit. The tax credit amount varies by household due to several factors, including whether the vehicle was manufactured in the United States, your income tax, and more.

The IRS states, “You may qualify for a credit up to $7,500 under Internal Revenue Code Section 30D if you buy a new, qualified, plug-in EV or fuel cell electric vehicle (FCV).” The inflation Reduction Act of 2022 changed the rules for this credit for vehicles purchased between 2023 and 2032.

The federal tax credit is enticing, but it’s important to understand that you may not qualify for the full amount. For example, if you purchased a qualifying vehicle but owe $3,500 in income tax for the year, you will receive this as your federal tax credit. However, if you owe $10,000 in federal income tax for the year, you will qualify for $7,500. Unused portions are not available for refunds or applicable for next year’s taxes.

To qualify for the new federal tax credits in the Inflation Reduction Act, electric vehicles must be assembled in North America, must have at least 40 percent of its critical battery minerals and 50 percent of its battery components originating from the United States or countries with a free trade agreement with the United States. EVs must also have a battery size of at least seven kWh and a gross vehicle weight of less than 14,000 pounds.

For vehicles priced below $25,000, a new federal tax credit of $4,000 has been implemented. For EVs with an MSRP below $55,000, the revised credit applies and also includes zero-emission vans, SUVs, and trucks with MSRPs up to $80,000. Individuals reporting adjusted gross incomes of $150,000 or less, $225,000 for heads of households, or $300,000 joint filers will qualify for the EV tax credit. The tax credit also applies to plug-in hybrid EVs (PHEVs) as long as they meet the requirements above.

Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Infrastructure: Procurement and Installation

It’s estimated that 35% of new car sales will be electric by 2030. While we anticipate the demand for EVs to increase, the prices are expected to drop as they become more available. Therefore, communities all over the U.S. (and the world) are starting to gear up in preparation for the electrification of the nation.

But what does installing charging infrastructure entail? Public EV chargers can be multifaceted and complex; they come with various payment structures, data collection, ownership models, parking and signage requirements, and are subject to regulations, safety and efficiency standards, equipment specifics, and other costs. Occasionally, formal requests for proposals (RFPs) are required as well.

Before purchasing, consider your community’s needs. Determine expected charging requirements based on travel patterns, EV ownership, time spent charging, and the anticipated customers. Once these factors are determined, a clearer picture will be given.

Also, bear in mind low-income or underserved populations without equitable EV charging access. Generally, these individuals are exposed to more environmental hazards, and EV chargers can encourage adoption and have a positive impact, thereby reducing negative effects.

It’s imperative to match EV charging solutions to the overall area. High-density urban communities, for example, would benefit from Level 2 on-street parking chargers or infrastructure set up within a parking garage. Rural areas may not be equipped with on-street parking, etc., so a fast-charging station may be a better option.

The main actionable steps in procuring and installing EV charger infrastructure:

Equipment: Determine what’s best to meet current demand with scalable growth. Equipment needs will vary based on application, location, charging level, and type. It can include networking capabilities, theft deterrence, output power rating, connectors, the number of charged vehicles, operation and maintenance, and more.

Installation: Factors include the number and type of charging systems, geographic and site locations, required trenching, wiring, required electrical upgrades, labor costs, and permits.

Networking: To install a networked charging station, the site must have access to the internet. The networked charging infrastructure can submit data, such as usage, and the site host can monitor the network, smartphone or credit card processing, and more.

Requirements: Other items to consider include compliance, permits, inspections, and specific certifications are often mandatory, along with signage markings, lighting, utility, and ownership specifications.

Going electric may seem like a daunting task; however, don’t fret! The team at State Electric Co. comprises highly qualified electricians, project managers, engineers, safety managers, and other professionals who are ready to walk you through each step.
